Loch Ness

Deep in the heart of the Highlands, this beautifully restored heritage property is a short hop from Loch Ness.

If you’re looking for a true taste of Scotland, this is it. Deep in the heart of the Highlands, this beautifully restored heritage property is a short hop from Loch Ness, the Great Glen and some of the world’s most famous distilleries.

The peace and quiet makes it hard to believe you’re just off the A82 and close to the city of Inverness. And the mod cons in the cottage – including a dishwasher and DVD player – make it easy to relax and enjoy this welcoming 19th century home.

Upstairs there’s one double and one twin bedroom plus a family bathroom. Unwind in the traditional claw-footed tub, admiring open views over the surrounding hills. Downstairs there’s the large dining kitchen and a cosy living area with a welcoming open fire. And if you want to get your fill of the fresh Scottish air, step outside into a small private garden. What better way to get the full flavour of the Highlands?

You don’t have to go far to enjoy this part of the world. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the garden. Just relax and watch the boats sail peacefully down the canal, right at the end of the front lawn. Or take a walk along the towpath to admire the surrounding scenery. Then visit the Oakwood Restaurant and sample some of its delicious home-cooked meals. All right on your doorstep.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, a 15-minute drive will take you to Inverness where you’ll find options for everyone. High street shopping at the Eastgate Centre or boutique browsing at the Victorian Market. Open topped bus tours or forest walks. Inverness Castle, St Andrew’s Cathedral, the Pictish fort on Craig Phadrig or the museum and art gallery.

Who could visit the Inverness area without a trip to see Nessie? Canal cruises will take you to Loch Ness, where you could be next to catch sight of Scotland’s best-loved monster. But in case she doesn’t make an appearance, there’s plenty of other wildlife to enjoy. Red and roe deer, ospreys and eagles – you might even be lucky enough to spot rarely-seen wildcats or pine martens.

On the Moray Firth the WDCS Dolphin Centre is the perfect place to see the world’s biggest bottlenose dolphins. And depending on the time of year, you might even be able to do some whale-watching. Minke and killer whales both visit these waters, and there have been sightings of sperm whales and pilot whales too. The centre offers hourly guided tours and a brilliant learning centre kids will love – and admission is entirely free.

A little further afield are the Cairngorms and the UK’s largest National Park. The closest villages to Dochgarroch are Carrbridge and Boat of Garten but there are many more. In fact, why not visit them all, in style, on the Strathspey Steam Railway?

If all that isn’t Scottish enough for you, there’s also golf. Nairn – voted home of Scotland’s Best Beach by TripAdvisor users – offers two of the world’s best-known links courses. Plus, of course, that beach, and a stunning drive north past the famous battlefield of Culloden and the Bronze Age Clava Cairns.

Choose to do any or all of these things, or just decide to stay in the garden and enjoy the quiet. Either way, we’re sure you’ll want to come back to Dochgarroch again and again.
