Canalside Cottages
Fort Augustus

Admire the multitude of boats at this historical fort

Tucked away at the south end of Loch Ness on the Great Glen Way, Fort Augustus is a small settlement which is dubbed a must-see by tourists and locals alike. Constructed during the 19th century, the canal is at the very centre of Fort Augustus and hard to miss! Offering sensational views down Loch Ness, it is a hot spot for walkers and cyclists who are taking on the Great Glen Way.

While visiting, guests to Fort Augustus can also visit the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre and learn more about the fascinating history of the canal. Many guests choose to sit and watch the array of boats navigate the locks, and there are also numerous cruises which start at Loch Ness.

On one side of the canal is the Loch Ness View Point where you can take in the awe-inspiring panoramas of the loch. Nestled on the other side is the Pepperpot Lighthouse – rumoured to be the smallest lighthouse in the UK.

If you really want to get into the Scottish spirit we recommend a visit to one of the local eateries to try a morsel of haggis (a surprisingly tasty mixture of meat, oatmeal, onions, spices and traditionally cooked in a sheep’s stomach).
